OTR (Over the Rhine in Cincinnati) is ever growing these days and one of my favorite foodie spots. Of course the other night I had to try out the latest restaurant to open in the gateway corridor, Kaze. It’s a self described Japanese Gastropub and sushi bar in the old color building on Vine Street.

Cool building and sign, right? The menu has small plates to share, Japanese inspired soups, entrees including pork cheeks and sea bass, and of course sushi. My friend Britney and I decided to share a few dishes from different sections of the menu to get a good sampling of what Kaze has to offer. We started with Momo a.k.a. grilled chicken skewers.

The chicken thighs came with a saam sauce and a little honey mustard. The skewers were perfectly grilled and the chicken was very tender. The sauces on the other hand were bland and didn’t add too much to the dish.

The Niku Sliders jumped off the menu at both of us and we knew we had to try them.

Niku-SlidersThe short rib sliders had a Korean BBQ sauce on them along with a cucumber kimchi. These sliders were so delicious! I loved the tartness and crunch the cucumber brought to the tender pork and sweet BBQ sauce. I definitely could have eaten more of these guys. Niku-Slider-soloFor our sushi course we went with the OTR and Nuevo California rolls. Sushi-RollsThe Nuevo California roll was sweet with the crab and guacamole. It was good, but the OTR roll was my favorite.

It had tuna and a spicy sauce on top. Yum! I’ll definitely go for the sushi again next time I go to Kaze.

There’s a fun bar in the back of the restaurant and they’re working on an outside biergarten area that will be a lot of fun to hang out in when the weather gets warmer.

What’s your favorite sushi place in your area?
